How to Combat Slavery

Slavery is a global issue and can easily seem overwhelming. So how can we combat slavery? There are 3 areas where we can help.

Helping those currently enslaved

Get laws enforced
Every country in the world has laws which prohibit slavery, but in many cases, the government is corrupt or not enforcing its laws. Work with organizations that fight to hold governments accountable through public awareness and political action.

Break supply chains
Many slaves are used to cheaply produce products sold in America. The products range from clothing and jewelry to fruit and mobile phones. Be aware of materials in the products you buy and where they come from. Write to retail stores to let them know you will not purchase products that support slave labor.

Helping slaves who have been freed

Education and Rehabilitation
Once a slave becomes free most people think their job is done. However in most cases the freed person can still be poor, physically weak or hindered, uneducated, and without a job, making them susceptible to continual poverty and even become enslaved again. It’s critical that we provide the necessary medical, financial and educational assistance to fully free people from slavery.

Help prevent slavery in the first place

Help the poor make a living
A driving factor in slavery today is the large number of impoverished people under corrupt governments, which makes them vulnerable targets for enslavement. Working to improve this condition through education and job building opportunities can make a person self supporting and less likely to become a slave.
